I WAS born in Redcar a long time ago and, over the years, it has steadily gone downhill.
I have just been looking at the proposed new promenade with its "vertical pier". In my dictionary a pier is "A structure running out into the sea and used as a promenade or landing stage," so how can they build a vertical pier? Whatever it is, it is certainly not a pier.
They also want to alter a lot of things along the promenade, but to me it looks as though they are spending money to make it different but not necessarily better. The money would be better spent to bring back businesses in the High Street. At the moment it's about one third virtual shops, one third charity shops and the rest are normal businesses.
Shell Beads CheapWe have two boating lakes in the town, but not one boat on either of them. When I was boy both lakes had boats and were very popular, especially the one in Locke Park where there would be long queues to have a row around a very pleasant lake.
BAS GUNN, Redcar IT appears that Redcar residents are not in favour of the seafront tower - I refuse to dignify it with the ridiculous sobriquet "vertical pier". Poor George Dunning must wish he had never uttered the absurd words and now he has painted himself into a corner.
In his last letter Pros And Cons (02.09.10), he uses a letter from a Mr Pearce in a vain attempt to bolster his case. Alas George, the case is untenable.
Why not run a proper consultation and referendum and lay the matter to rest in a manner that satisfies democracy? Does he honestly believe tourists will flock to see this albino pachyderm? This is something Ian Swales MP needs to get his teeth into before Redcar becomes a national laughing stock.
PERCY Western wallets POTTS, Marton * * * * * * IN a recent full council meeting, councillor for leisure and tourism Cllr Clarke states that Redcar & Cleveland Council are going to ruin Redcar seafront with offices in the Hub and further offices in the seafront thing she calls a pier.
They are also going to tear down our grand old shelters on the seafront. Ms Stamp summed up the situation with her very gentle comments. I would add in the situation very gentle comments.
I understand Cllr Clarke said in the council meeting "that it would cost pounds 50m to build a new proper pier - find us the money". In your article it says pounds 40m for the hub and pounds 10m for that "other Mens Jewelry thing". That's pounds 50m - enough for a proper pier, so let's get it built.
JAMES COOPER, Marske * * * * * * IN response to Cllr Steve Kay's letter (02.09.10) on the vertical pier name, this came from a group of young architects and designers who won the seaFront design award via the independent panel headed by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Of course Cllr Kay was the only councillor that voted for further consultation at the council meeting, as all the others knew that there has been extensive consultation events since July 2008.
Does Councillor Kay live in the real world? What about the Coalition government cuts of pounds 3.1m for this year alone on top of VFM savings? Of course if the funding for a horizontal pier (pounds 50m is one quote) can be found via the Government then, of course, Redcar & Cleveland would look to build one.
I'm not sure that money will be made available from a government hChristian Louboutin Shoes
